I started Sean’s Handyman Services in September 2018 as a side business. I have been honing my handyman skills for decades working on my own homes, and my career as a project manager wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought it would be, so turning my handyman skills into a home-based business seemed like a good idea.
By the beginning of 2020, I was blessed to have built a small client base and had started getting a taste of what it was like to work for myself. I was doing small jobs like gutter cleanings, pet door installations, and fence repairs and found that I really enjoyed doing those kinds of tasks for people. I was nowhere near able to take my humble business full-time, but I had dreams of doing so one day.
Then COVID hit. And whether I was ready for it or not, so did the dream of becoming a full-time handyman.
In April 2020, about two weeks into the shutdown and working my project management job from home, I received the call that far too many people received: I was fired, effective immediately. In the blink of an eye, my 15-year career was gone.
I frantically updated my dusty resume and began submitting dozens of them to various companies. Despite the initial shock, I was sure I wouldn’t be unemployed for long. Some lucky company would see my experience and snatch me up in a heartbeat, right? Wrong. For every job applied for, I received a “Thanks but no thanks” email. I couldn’t believe it. But, as God’s Providence would have it, a funny thing happened. The first day after being let go, my phone started ringing for handyman work. And it kept on ringing. It didn’t take long for me to realize my white-collar career was turning blue, and you know what? I absolutely love it and wouldn’t have it any other way.
